ERT — Regional authorities issued a severe weather warning  for Chania prefecture. Crete is bracing for a cold snap as of Wednesday with heavy snowfall expected in higher ground and heavy rain at lower ground and  storm force winds reaching 9 Bft  according to the National Meteorological Service (EMY).

The regional authorities advise farmers in Chania prefecture who keep their animals on higher ground to make sure they animals have enough feed for at least  the next three days as mountain roads are expected to become impassable and authorities may not be able to deal with all the anticipated emergencies.

Significantly lower temperatures are expected with the possibility of black ice on country roads.

The authorities also advise the public to take particular care on the road, and if possible avoid all non essential travel to the countryside between Wednesday evening and Saturday when the worst of the weather is expected.  Patients with conditions that require regular hospital treatment were also advised to remain in or near Chania.
