An Apokoronas council initiative in collaboration with the Natural History museum of Crete is going to create special  feeding areas for vultures in Asi Gonia to help the preservation of the protected species of Bearded (Gypaetus barbatus) and Griffon vultures (Gyps fulvus) as well as other rare protected birds of prey that make the White mountains their home.

Special feeders are going to be placed in selected locations within the Natura 2000 designated area. The food will be supplied by the slaughter house in the area using the byproducts of meat preparation.

The feeding areas are going to be secured while bird watching stations are expected to attract a number of bird watchers in the area.
