UK bands raise money for refugees in Greece in series of one-off events in December

BBC — Some of the UK’s top bands are getting together next month to help raise money for refugees.

The series of one-off events is being organised by the charity Help Refugees and will take place between 4-24 December as part of its Choose Love winter appeal.

Cash raised from the events will go towards making the lives of refugees living in Greek camps easier.

Music DJ Lauren Laverne is launching the appeal.

She said: “I’m delighted to be hosting what promises to be an amazing night of music at London’s Jazz Cafe, in aid of the most fantastic cause. Choose love this December.”

The line-up includes Jamie Cullum, Years and Years, KT Tunstall and Faithless, who will all take part during the course of the 20-day appeal.

The UK dance scene is also getting involved in an event called Rave for Refugees, which is two club nights taking place at London’s Electric Brixton.

Rudimental, Sigma, Shy FX and Chase and Status will perform DJ sets on 15 December.

Saul from Chase & Status told Newsbeat: “There are 10,000 refugees there but over a million across the Mediterranean in the last year.

“We feel something needs to happen, it needs to be addressed and it needs help from outside people to raise awareness and hopefully raise some funds

“There are a lot of refugees living in Greece, for example.

“The camps there are not ready for the winter weather, they are living in tents that are suitable for mid-summer.

“[It would be good] even if we can just get them some money and help in places where there are thousands of pregnant women who are also refugees.”
