Two pedestrians killed in Chania road accident

Two more people died Thursday after being hit by a car while walking their dog along a road in front of the Technical University of Crete in Kounoupidiana, Chania. The victims were a 20-year-old woman, an architecture student at the University, and a 19-year-old man on his summer holidays, both from Athens. The dog was also killed in the accident.

The driver, a 20-year-old Georgian national, has been arrested.

The particular location where the accident occurred around 7:00 am on Thursday is a known accident blackspot.

The university released a statement expressing its condolences to the victims’ families and calling for action to be taken so that  the streets near the university to be made safer for pedestrians.

Fifteen people have died in road accidents in the  Chania Prefecture  so far this year, 47% of all the road deaths in Crete.   Three of those were pedestrians.

In the whole of Crete there have been 32 road accident deaths this year with six pedestrian deaths.
