The British Commonwealth dead remembered

Remembrance Sunday was observed yesterday  at the last resting place of the British Commonwealth war dead who lost their lives between May 20th and May 31st 1941, during the Battle for Crete.

Veterans, dignitaries and visitors gathered as they do every year in November  for the service and wreath laying ceremony on the shore of Souda Bay at the principal Allied War Cemetery of the island, designed by architect Louis de Soissons

 There are 1527 graves, mostly for British dead , with 447  New Zealander, and 197 Australian graves. Several soldiers from other Commonwealth countries who lost their lives in the Battle of Crete are also buried there.

Not all those buried were identified and some headstones bear the legend “Known only to God.”
