Sheep farmers trapped by snow at 1100 metres rescued on Boxing day

Three sheep farmers from Sfakia were trapped at their animal enclosures at Mouri, Sfakia in the White Mountains since Friday evening, when they went to tend to their sheep but could not return to their homes because of heavy snowfall.

Efforts to rescue them over the Christmas  weekend failed as the road leading at the sheep pens was completely blocked by deep snow drifts.

The three men had managed to sent messages saying that they are well  and that they have all they need at their sheep shelter, located at an altitude of 1100 metres, for such an emergency.

On Saturday one of the three men made his way back to a clear part of the road after walking two hours in the snow. He was then picked up and taken home safe and well.

On Boxing day a Sfakia council snow plough reached the other two men at around 17:00 after several attempts. Both men were found in good health, and were taken to lower ground in the snow plough.

The mayor of Sfakia praised the snow plough operator for working the whole of Boxing day in very difficult conditions.
