Severe show storms cause chaos on Crete roads

Severe snow storms have caused problems across the road network in Crete.

Several roads were completely snowbound while snow chains were necessary in many others.

Schools are expected to remain closed  in most municipalities in Heraklion, Rethymnon and Chania on Monday as many country roads are closed and driving conditions on most of minor roads  are treacherous

Civil protection in Chania is making every possible effort to keep the roads open but the intense snowfalls that lasted for most of the day and sub zero temperatures at night made driving conditions very difficult  and drivers are asked to avoid using the roads altogether.

There were some reports of rockfalls on the national road between Georgioupolis and Kasteli.

The cold spell is expected to last at least another 24 hours, til Monday evening
