National road: 11 tonne rock precariously balanced over motorists

Nea TV via Apokoronas Life — Motorists using the national road are not  aware of the danger that is literally hanging over their heads. The threat comes in the form of a huge 11 tonne rock at Skepasti, Rethymnon, left to be precariously balanced over the east bound lane of the national road after the recent land slide.

Spepasti residents who are aware of the danger tell a Nea TV reporter that they have notified the appropriate authorities responsible for the maintenance of the national road, but nobody has responded.

One of the residents, Kostas Aggelakis says that he is so worried about the risk of the rock falling that he has stopped using that stretch of road. ” Nobody knows when the rock is going to fall” he tells Nea TV. “It will only another rain to loosen the rock completely ant it will slide down onto the road”

According to local residents rockfalls and landslides have been common in that part of the national road since the 70s. But they add that we are now in 2015 with a lot more vehicles on the road and a much better technical capability to address the problem.

It is not known when the highways department of the region of Crete will act to ensure that motorists can travel safely  on that particular part of the national road, the report concludes
