Heraklion blaze under control – Risk of fires remains

eKathimerini — Firefighters on  Crete managed to bring a large blaze under partial control after several hours on Monday .

The fire broke out near the village of Apesokari, in Messara Heraklion , and was fanned by strong winds.

A total 20 firefighters, manning 10 fire engines, were involved in the effort to contain the blaze.

40 000 sq metres of grazing  frygana land and some olive trees were burnt. The fire was thought to have been deliberately started but a full investigation of the causes is to follow.

Heraklion Civil Protection Authority  has said that the fire risk remains high all this week because of the weather conditions and has asked the emergency cervices to remain on alert and the public to be vigilant
