Greece eases capital controls from 1 September

From today, 1 September comes into force a further lifting of capital restrictions, which have been in place since mid-2015.

The further lifting of the cash limit on bank withdrawals became possible in light of the country’s improving economic situation.

Several restrictions that ban companies and individuals from opening new bank accounts have also been lifted.  Additionally, from 1 September, bank account holders will be able to withdraw up to 50 percent of funds that are transferred from abroad to existing bank accounts in Greece.

The last time Greece eased its capital restrictions was in July 2016.

The Greek government was forced to introduced controls on bank withdrawals and overseas transactions  in 2015 for fear of a bank run amid the country’s economic crisis.
