Fire service tackles blaze near homes in Tsivaras

A fire that broke out on Sunday around 2pm in Tsivaras, just to the south of the olive press was brought under control after 4 hours, with the help of 16 fire engines and two helicopters.

Fanned by strong winds the fire quickly burnt 30 stremma of forest and 10 stremma of agricultural land.

The wind pushed the flames further south east towards the Douliana crossproads  where there are a number of houses.

The swift and decisive action of the fire service prevented damage to buildings including the municipal animal surgery clinic which is in the area affected by the fire.

Four appliances with crews remained in the area overnight to deal with any rekindling of hot spots.
