Dust cloud covers Crete

Crete once again is covered in a cloud of dust that presents increased health risks to vulnerable groups, public health authorities have warned. The concentration of pm10 particulates will, during the day, exceed the levels of 50 μg/m3 which is considered the limit of safety.  The dust may also contain traces of heavy metals.

PM10 is particulate matter 10 micrometers or less in diameter.  By way of comparison, a human hair is about 100 micrometres, so roughly 10 particles could be placed on its width

Individuals with respiratory or heart conditions and the elderly are advised to restrict outdoor activity. The dust is expected to start  clearing on Monday with the wind changing  direction to northerly.
