The Mirror — A British couple have become heroes in Greece after returning woman’s purse with over €7000 they found on the street in Agios Nikolaos.

Jessica Frank,  22, who works for Middlesborough Council, and 24-year-old Edward Gibson, a trainee electrical engineer, were holidaying in Crete when they found the purse and took it straight to a police station.

“We were walking past a couple of small souvenir shops when I kicked something that looked like a little bag, a bit like a makeup bag, with my foot,” said Jessica.

“When we opened the bag – I can’t really explain what it was like. There was just money all wrapped in elastic bands. Our first thought was to take it to the local police station and that’s what we did.

“We took a taxi and handed it in. They counted it in front of us and it came to around 7,100 Euros. We knew there was a lot in there but that much – it was so unexpected.”

The couple, who live in Darlington, left the matter with the police and went back to their hotel.

A short while later the phone rang and it was the police who wanted to see them down at the station. They had reunited the cash with its owner and she wanted to meet the couple.

“We got to the police station and they said ‘someone wants to meet you’,” said Jessica.

“There was this little old lady just sat there – she was so emotional. She kept hugging us and blessing us with good luck for the rest of our lives. She owned a few little shops and the money was her takings, it was a lot of money to her.”

Jessica says she’s lost count of the number of times people have asked her and Edward whether they felt like keeping the haul instead of handing it in. But, says Jessica, the thought literally never crossed their minds.

“Not one bit of us, neither me nor Edward, thought ‘let’s keep it,’” she said. “We just took it straight away to the police station.”

News of the find last Monday quickly spread to the Greek media and the couple became minor celebrities on the island after word of their unselfish actions got around.

Jessica said they were ‘called heroes’ by locals, who gave them free taxi rides and offered them a hotel upgrade.

They were stopped and congratulated in the street by locals who recognised them and the shopkeeper invited the couple to her shop and told them to select anything they wanted as a present but they didn’t, added Jessica, as they just didn’t expect anything to come of their actions.
