Cretan farmers join the campaign against increased taxes

Cretan farmers launched their own campaign  protests against the government’s new plans to increase taxes on farmers.

In Chania, farmers  gathered in Mournies junction in their trucks and drove in a motorcade to Chania prefecture building

In Heraklion,a tractor gathering at the Pancretan Stadium started off the the protest. From the Stadium the farmers drove their tractors to Eleftherias Square to the regional offices of Crete to make their demands heard by the regional authorities.

Meanwhile , the meeting between Greek farmers and the Deputy Finance Minister Tryphon Alexiadis turned out to be a fruitless one. “We can’t change what has already been written,” said Alexiadis to farmer association representatives.

During the meeting which lasted about half an hour, both groups focused on all the issues regarding the taxation of farmers, but there was no clear resolution for the two sides to agree upon. The deputy finance minister clarified to the farmers’ representatives that the measures provided in the agreement with the country’s creditors cannot be changed.
