eKathimerini — A community on Crete is reeling in shock after unknown assailants defecated on icons and the altar of their local church.

The incident occurred at the Church of Aghia Pelagias in the Pachia Ammos region of Lasithi.

It was the latest in a series of incidents over the last two years at churches in Chania, Rethymno and Heraklion involving defecation on icons and the spraying of offensive slogans against Christians on church walls.

In a similar attack in Heraklion last month, assailants defecated on 13 icons and on the main altar and sprayed slogans on the walls reading “S..t to Christians” and “Zeus is buying,” leading authorities to believe the attacks are the work of the same individual or group.
