Civil servant vet suspended over bribery

eKathimerini — A civil servant working for a state-run veterinary service in the town of Komotini, in northeastern Greece, has been suspended and will face a disciplinary committee for allegedly taking bribes on a regular basis, the Agriculture Ministry said Wednesday.

According to reports, the Agriculture Ministry investigated the service after several tests for Brucella, a bacterium which affects cattle and milk production were returned positive while the animals showed no symptoms.

The Komotini lab work was part of a government programme for the eradication of Brucella.

The decision, taken by Agriculture Minister Vangelis Apostolou, follows the civil servant’s indictment by a local prosecutor.
