eKathimerini — Greek authorities evacuated the small village of Spina, Kandanou/Selinou, in the prefecture of Chania for precautionary reasons on Wednesday, as an out-of-control wildfire approached the outskirts of the village.

Wind gusts were rekindling the blaze which started in a canyon on Wednesday afternoon and was burning through brushland and trees through the night.

Firefighters this morning continued their efforts to bring the fire front under control.

The fire service deployed 15 trucks with 35 men, two ground units and two water-dumping helicopters, while municipal authorities and local volunteers also threw their resources into the fight.

A second fire in Mylopotamos, Rethymnon was put under control during the night without endangering any residential settlements.
