Chania gunman protesting loss of livelihood surrendered

Police in Chania were on on alert on Monday morning when an armed man broke int0 a drug rehabilitation facility (OKANA) in the town’s old psychiatric ward. There were reports of shots being fired.

It is believed that the pistol-wielding man, was protesting against a decision by the local council to demolish the kiosk he operates in the Venetian harbour, because its operating licence had expired.

It is believed that the 45 year old man, father of five who is also believed to be a former drug user, threatened  three employees  of the centre who were in the building.

He surrendered to the police later on monday afternoon after speaking with the Mayor of Chania, Tasos Vamoukas who has arrived on the scene early  and took part in the six hour long negotiations.

The man will appear before the public prosecutor on Tuesday.
