eKathimerini — A court in Heraklion has found two 22-year-old British nationals guilty of the rape of a young woman, also a British national, on the island during the summer of 2015.

The two suspects were handed five-year suspended jail sentences, pending appeal, with bail set at 5,000 euros each by June 16.

The court took into consideration the young age of the accused as a mitigating factor when passing sentence.

The court also heard that the young woman who was celebrating her 18th birthday at the time is still suffering the psychological effects of that night and that it has changed her life forever.

Alcohol-driven party “enclaves”, mostly catering to young adults and even older teens from Britain, have in the past generated headlines, along with varying levels of lewd and often violent behavior.
