30 lives lost on the roads of Crete so far this year

Serious road accidents in Crete are on the increase against the trend of a 13% decrease in accidents in the rest of Greece.

The number of road deaths caused alarm to the authorities given that we are still in the beginning of the summer season when statistically most serious accidents occur.

The latest road death that of a 70 year old who was killed in a head on collision between two vehicles on the national road in Heraklion on 12 June bring the total of fatalities to 30 since the beginning of the year.

The Road Accident Prevention Group of Crete are making an appeal to the regional authorities and the highways agency to take measures to improve safety on the national road, thought to be one of the most dangerous in the country. At the same time an appeal is made to drivers to take particular care when driving, particularly not to use excessive speeds, and to never drink and drive
